The best family friendly beaches in West Cornwall Porthreptor or Barrepta beach is probably better known as Carbis Bay and a halt on the St. Erth to St Ives railway branch line.  There is NO beach at Chapel Porth at high tide and swimming is prohibited. At low tide however, the sea retreats to exhibit fine golden sand.  Crantock Beach is quite large at low tide but the beach disappears rapidly on an incoming tide due to its very flat nature.  Fistral Beach is world reknowned in surfing circles as probably the best surfing beach in the UK.  Great Western Beach is most easily approached from the west by crossing over Towan Beach. Lusty Glaze Beach is a quite small beach at the eastern end of Newquay's main beaches.  The sand at low tide extends over a large area and is extremely flat.  Porth should more properly be called 'St. Columb Porth'.  Porthmgwidden Beach is the smallest of St. Ives' beaches.  Porth Kidney Sands lie on the western bank of the Hayle estuary.  Walking west from Carbis Bay the coastal footpath leads over Porthminster Point down onto the excellent Porthminster Beach.  The name of this cove in Cornish means 'Cove of dunes'. There is a fairly level beach, even at high tide, growing considerably at low tide.  The name of this beach may have derived from the Cornish Porth Treath meaning 'Beach Cove'. Tolcarne Beach offers a fine expanse of golden sand to its visitors.  Towan Beach is a firm favourite with most visitors due to its proximity to the Aquarium and the harbour.  Walking west from the excellent Porthminster Beach, Town beach has golden sand and is sheltered by Smeaton's Pier.  Whitesand Bay lies just about a mile northeast of Land's End on the western tip of Cornwall. The Bay is made up by the two beaches of Sennen Cove Beach and Gwynver Beach. |
