Mid Cornwall - James, Retire, Colbiggan & RosewarrickOS Explorer Map 106: Grid reference SX006653 These four mines lie close to reach other and run from north to south along an iron lode near the village of Retire in Withiel Parish, to the west of Bodmin. Very little is known about these mines save for the fact that Wheal James lay threequarters of a mile east of Withiel, and produced haematite and manganese oxide from the iron ore. There are several shafts on the lode but most are either unnamed or their names have not been recorded. Records of production are also patchy: Wheal Retire raised 23,960 tons of iron ore between 1856 and 1870. Colbiggan meanwhile raised 4,930 tons of iron ore in 1874. Now that 'World Heritage' status has been achieved Cornwall in Focus will monitor developments and learn how the mines of Mid Cornwall fare within the overall Mining framework. For those of you with
