St. Austell Mining District - Mulberry Hill Mine

OS Explorer Map 106: Grid reference SX019657

Mulberry Hill lies one and three quarter miles northwest of Lanivet on the southern side of Mulberry Downs. It lies in the Lanivet Section of the St. Austell Mining District. An opencast quarry rather than a tin mine, it was an ancient operation. It worked at times with Wheal Prosper Tin Mine (grid reference SX030642). Nearby lay Tremore Quarry, about threequarters of a mile to the southwest. Mulberry Hill tin mine worked on and off over the years and was not a great producer, although it did raise 1,350 tons of tin between 1859 and 1916.

Now that 'World Heritage' status has been achieved Cornwall in Focus will monitor developments and learn how the mines of the St. Austell District fare within the overall Mining framework.

For those of you with possibly a little more time to explore, once you've done 'the tourist bit', why not explore Cornwall's industrial heritage through its Tin and Copper Mines or learn more from my Cornish Bookstore
