The Mines of Redruth - Treleigh Wood

The sett of Treleigh Wood Mine included the smaller mines of Wheal Harmony and Wheal Montague and is situated about a mile north of Redruth. It should not be confused with Treleigh Consols Mine situated at Grid ref. SW696439. the sett lay just to the west of Wheal Prussia. Treleigh Wood Mine was a relatively small concern raising only 37 tons of 8% copper ore and 533 tons of black tin between 1874 and 1878. Wheals Montague and Harmony however are on record as having produced 29,407 tons of 10.5% copper ore between 1819 and 1844, as well as 3 tons of black tin.

The mines worked a number of lodes from Windmill Shaft, Engine Shaft and Nutwood (also known as Nutbottom) Shaft. Thomas Spargo writes in his 'The Mines of Cornwall and Devon; Statistics and Observations' (1865) that Wheal Harmony was '... in Redruth. Idle. This was a rich mine and deserves further prosecution'. He does not mention Wheal Montague or Treleigh Wood Mines.
