The North Coast - Trevone ConsolsOS Explorer Map 106: Grid reference SW896773 The mine was known to have been at work from at least 1824 when it was known as Wheal Galway. Trevone Consols has been known by various names over the years: Padstow Consols, Padstow Silver-Lead Mine, and Cuddrabridge. It lies on the clifftops about a mile northwest of Padstow on the North Cornwall Coast adjacent to Middle Merope Island near Gunver Head. There are no obvious remains to view here and the majority of coastal footpath walkers pass by unwittingly. Chiefly a modest lead producer Padstow Consols, as Cuddrabridge, raised 75 tons of 75% lead ore and 270 ounces of silver in 1876-77. Now that 'World Heritage' status has been achieved Cornwall in Focus will monitor developments and learn how the mines of North Cornwall fare within the overall Mining framework. For those of you with
possibly a little more time to explore, once you've done
'the tourist
bit', why not explore Cornwall's industrial heritage through its Tin and Copper Mines or learn more from my Cornish Bookstore |
