Mines of the St Ives Area - Tyringham Consols

Grid reference SW494385

Location
The sett of Tyringham Consols lies just to the south of Rosewall Hill and to the west of Polmanter Water in Towednack parish about two miles west of St. Ives. Otherwise known as West Wheal Providence and also as Wheal Buzza, very little now remains above ground to show that there was a mine here. It was renamed Bussow Mine in 1880, the Chief Agent at this time was William Buglehole.

There is not a lot of information on Tyringham Consols however, even Thomas Spargo, that fount of knowledge, in his report on the mines of Cornwall and Devon entitled 'Statistics and Observations on the Mines of Cornwall and Devon' (1865) simply states: 'Set to work by Captain Thomas Richards and Co., not effectually tried; idle.'. It is however known to have worked four main lodes: Tyringham, Montague, South and Parkin's Lodes from ten shafts: Drysack, Ada's Flat Rod, Highbarrow, Trawn, West Trawn, Adit, Cooper's Engine, Giesters, Brown's and Parkins Shafts.

For more information read the excellent Cornish Mines: Metalliferous and Associated Minerals, 1845-1913 (Mineral Statistics of the United Kingdom, 1845-1913) by Roger Burt.

For those of you with possibly a little more time to explore, once you've done 'the tourist bit', why not explore Cornwall's industrial heritage through its Tin and Copper Mines or learn more from my Cornish Bookstore
