St Agnes Mines - West Wheal Kitty

Thomas Engine House, West Wheal Kitty, St. Agnes

West Wheal Kitty lies surrounded by houses in the centre of St. Agnes. The West Wheal Kitty Group included around about 30 older setts such as Wheal Kine, Wheal Rock and Livingstone Consols (New Wheal Kitty). There were two main shafts - Thomas's and Reynolds. Thomas' Engine House is the only building still standing. It lies at the southern end of the West Wheal Kitty Sett and was built in 1892 housing a 40-inch pumping engine. It lies just off Vicarage Road behind the St. Agnes Pottery in Churchtown, whilst the site of Reynolds shaft lies some 250 metres north of Thomas's. See the St Agnes Forum website for more information.

'World Heritage' status has been gained for this area. Cornwall in Focus are waiting to see just how West Wheal Kitty mine fits into the overall mine restoration framework.

For those of you with possibly a little more time to explore, once you've done 'the tourist bit', why not explore Cornwall's industrial heritage through its Tin and Copper Mines or learn more from my Cornish Bookstore
