Cornish past and present

Cornish (Kernewek) is a Brythonic Celtic language. It is a recognised minority language within the United Kingdom. Along with Welsh and Breton, it is directly descended from the ancient British language spoken throughout much of Britain before the English language came to dominate.

Cornish gained official recognition in the European Community as a minority language in 2002.

Cornish words and phrases

There has, over the past 100 years or so, been an upsurge in interest in our native tongue. Work started by Henry Jenner in 1904 has grown steadily over the years so that there are now an increasing number of people studying the language.

In the 21st century it is quite possible to listen to Cornish music, watch independent films and read a growing number of books in the Cornish Language. The language is taught in many schools and can be accessed by all through innovations such as youtube and social networking sites.
