At the heart of an historic estate, owned by the National Trust since 2000, lies one of Cornwall's most beautiful and romantic old houses. Newly acquired by the Trust, Godolphin was considered in the 17th century to be the most fashionable house in Cornwall. It was the springboard for the political ambitions of the illustrious Godolphin family, who had made their fortune from the rich mineral deposits on the estate. However, after 1710 no Godolphin lived here, and the house and estate were left to settle gently into the landscape.

Trereife House - A fine Manor House on the outskirts of Newlyn and Penzance.
Look a little further inland from Mount’s Bay and, at the edge of Penzance, you’ll find Trereife House (pronounced Treave). The neat parterres and terraces of a classic Cornish garden form the entrance to the historic house, The Le Grice family’s horses graze the surrounding parkland and the rich blue of the bay can be glimpsed just beyond the woodland. A more romantic or elegant setting can hardly be imagined. The house and grounds offer the perfect facilities for a wedding, meeting, conference and film venue. We have staged opera, jazz and theatrical events. We also have our own art gallery with shows scheduled throughout the season. The garden at Trereife benefits from having one of only five modern parterre gardens. Parterre comes from the french for ‘on the ground’ and is defined as being a garden constructed on a a surface of planting beds, edged in stone or tightly clipped hedging and gravel paths. Laid out in 1999 in time for the new millennium, the elaborate parterre was planned out by designer, Lyn Le Grice, to enliven the terrace adjacent to the Queen Anne front of 1904. Divided by a ‘ha ‘ha’ from the parkland if offered a spacious format and a chance of a fresh focus for the garden.
Prices Trereife will be open every Wednesday between the 18th May and 1st October 2011 from 11.00 until 4.00. Guided tours will take place at 2.30 and the cost of the tour is £7 for adults, £6 for concessions and children under 16, accompanied by an adult go free (complimentary tickets for bed and breakfast guests).

Trewithen has been described as perhaps the most beautiful woodland garden in Britain. It is an historic private estate internationally famous for its collection of Camellias, Rhododendrons and Magnolias. The gardens were developed by George Johnstone at the time of the great plant hunting expeditions between 1910 and 1932. Astonishing seed collections were sent back to the UK and he then went on to design and plant the woodland garden of Trewithen that we see today.
Trewithen is a rare Cornish gem.
