The New Harbour Restaurant. Formerly known as 'finn's', now renamed as The New Harbour Restaurant, the same traditions of cooking are continued. The seafood wasn't your ordinary battered cod it had clean tastes and fresh uncomplicated flavours. The food was a picture on a plate, but only in the sense that what you saw, was what you ate. No frills or artifice got in the way. This food imposed discipline in uncomplicated presentation for its beauty is in its natural austerity: a lobster simply dressed with olive oil and a rub of chilli, a skewer of monkfish and king prawns chargrilled to perfection or a plate of fresh scallops just pan fried is perfect. New Harbour Restaurant believes that all that is on the plate is to be eaten. Tel. 01637 874062

St Petroc's Bistro. The atmosphere is bustling and lively where bold, modern paintings brighten the white walls of the bistro. There is a courtyard and pretty garden for al fresco eating albeit with parasols and space heaters to compensate for the variable weather. When we first opened St Petroc's Bistro more than 10 years ago, I served ‘elbows on the table’ food like Petit Salé, Duck Confit, Navarin of Lamb and Soups laden with garlic and lentils. Over the years the menu has become more modern and, while I don’t want to lose the best of those dishes, I want to reintroduce some classic bistro dishes like Bayonne Ham with Celeriac Remoulade, Moules Marinière, Steak Frites and Toulouse Sausage with Lentils. There is a good balance between fish and other items. As they say themselves ‘we prefer to talk to vegetarians and cook for them individually, rather than giving them nut cutlets’. Tel. 01841 533441

Rojanos

Rojano's. Rojano's is a mediterranean style cafe situated just off the harbour in the centre of Padstow in Mill Square. Recently brought into the portfolio of local chef and restauranteur Paul Ainsworth of the nearby No.6 restaurant.

Personal Recommendation: We decided to try Rojano's after finding some other recommended restaurants were shut for the day as it was early in the season. We were not disappointed.

We found the interior bright and airy and the service professional and efficient. It had a great atmosphere and we were made to feel welcome. The food was well presented in good sized portions and was piping hot. Overall a very nice experience on a hot day. We will visit again when in Padstow.

St Ives

St Andrews Street Bistro. There is more than a slight association between St Ives and Bohemia, thanks mainly to artistic influences, and now it is extending its influence through the food chain. Chef Proprietor Robert Armstrong serves mainly local food with inspired twists and additions that really pull in the gourmets. The surroundings are an eclectic mix of art nouveau meets gastro louche that clearly impresses the tourists and locals alike, and the menu takes much the same line. The menu is displayed on a vast blackboard in true bistro style, and mingles well with the candles and mismatched furniture. Fillets of red mullet arrive in the company of crushed spuds and roast tomatoes with dragoncello sauce. Grilled Merguez sausage with lentils, roast pumpkin and harissa makes a welcome change from the sometimes slightly overworked sausages in onion gravy with mashed tatties.

The Old Quay Inn. Situated in the picturesque creekside village of Devoran some 6 miles southwest of Truro. The Old Quay Inn is one of those Cornish 'secrets' - a dining pub used by locals but offering a very warm welcome to visitors lucky enough to find it. The landlord and staff are efficient and serve first-class food. Tucked quietly away from the busy Truro to Falmouth road; Devoran's present belies its past. Now a tranquil creek-side village, popular with small-boat sailors, it was once a busy commercial port, shipping copper ore from mines on the Great Flat Lode around Redruth, linked by a horse drawn tramway, now part of a Coast to Coast trail. The old village is a triangle of streets, Quay Street and the higher St. John's Terrace linked by Market Street. Several homes are conversions of old warehouses or of former port worker's cottages. On the Quay, a series of odd stone enclosures are the old ore hutches where the copper ore awaited shipment.

Saffron. An enthusiasm for food and a childhood ambition to become a chef inspired Nik Tinney to open his own restaurant in his hometown. From humble beginnings washing dishes at the Brookdale Hotel in Truro, Nik moved to London for a 3 year apprenticeship at Langans Brasserie. From there he worked at a number of London’s top hotels and restaurants. Returning to Truro after 16 years, with his wife Traci in 1999 they opened Saffron, with the aim to produce excellent food made from local ingredients, cooked to order and served in relaxed friendly environment at reasonable prices. Since then the eclectic menu style and the passion with which it is produced has meant Saffron has become one of Truro’s most popular restaurants. Nik attributes their success partly to the quality and freshness of the ingredients he uses. He is committed to sourcing as many of his ingredients from local farmers and producers as possible. Menus are changed weekly in accordance with availability of fresh ingredients and the seasons. Although this makes menu writing challenging, it is worthwhile as it enables Nik to capture the true flavours of his ingredients. All food is produced on the premises including the bread, which is baked daily and the biscuits served with the morning coffee. Tel. 01872 263771
