Land's End 5º43'West 50º04'North
For a suitable Ordnance Survey map of the area please buy OS Explorer 102 - Land's End; or see my Land's End Map for more details. The most westerly point of England, some 10 miles west of Penzance. Here 200 feet high granite cliffs jut out into the Atlantic. The Longships Lighthouse about a mile offshore along with Pendeen Watch Light to the east and Tater Dû, near Lamorna, warn shipping of the jagged nature of the coast here. There are quite spectacular cliff walks northwards to Sennen and to Penberth and Gwennap Head in the south and on occasions dolphins and the odd basking shark may be seen. It is also possible to see the Isles of Scilly from here on a clear day, some 28 miles away to the west.
A quite large tourist attraction has grown up here with over 30 separate attractions making up the 'Legendary Land's End' experience. Things to see include 'The Land of Greeb' - a coastal farm modelled on the 19th century; 'The Lost Labyrinth' - an audio- visual insight into Cornwall of the past, with its stories of shipwrecks, smugglers, wreckers and pirates; and the 'Land's End John O'Groats Hall of Fame'. My favourite will always be the 'Famous Land's End Signpost', where the distance from Land's End to anywhere in the world can be set up and used as the 'perfect photo opportunity'.
