Showman's Wagon, Goongillings

Picture of Showman

Goongillings Farm, originally a dairy and arable farm has been in our family for many years. The farm runs down to the upper reaches of the Helford River with half a mile of tidal foreshore and its own private quay. Both cottages and farm are covenanted to the National Trust to preserve them from development, and the area is designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

One of the more unusual places to stay is in a fully restored 'Showmans Wagon'...

This is a new addition to our range of accommodation at Goongillings, as a result of a restoration project we have undertaken recently. These were built for the itinerant fairground workers and performers at around the turn of the century when steam engines became available to tow the equipment and their caravans. Between 1995 and 1999 the exterior was restored painstakingly by Frank Pollard whose farm it rested on, but when he died it had to be sold to settle his estate, which was when we brought it to Goongillings. Since then we have been fitting out the interior - aiming to make a balance between comfort and tradition - including some modem facilities but retaining the original style and fittings where possible. Trying to get the colour and style right has been central to the restoration. The wagon has now been moved to a lovely spot in the little meadow behind the farmyard. It is available to rent as an annex to any of the cottages which we have. It has a double bed plus space for one child and a stove, a camping loo, two burner hob and fridge as well as hot and cold running water and a sink. A simple shower and washing facilities are available in a small summer house just behind the wagon. It is irresistibly romantic and was a popular addition to our range of accommodation during the past few years for those attracted to a somewhat unusual place to stay.

Chydane

Picture of Chydane

Perched above a three mile shingle beach and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Chydane lies in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the western end of the Lizard Peninsula. Very few houses enjoy such a dramatic location so close to the sea. There is always something to see. Above the waves gannets and cormorants swoop and dive. A seal is a regular visitor - its head just visible off the rocks. In June four basking sharks spent an evening cruising up and down a couple of hundred yards off the shore. In summer evenings, just before the sun isinks behind the Land's End Peninsula, hundreds of seagulls fly overhead back to their roosting place on Mullion Island, a little farther along the coast. On land, kestrels hang on the breeze just yards from your window. Wonderful coastal walks begin with just a step outside the front gate. Along the beach, or above on the cliffs, in either direction breathtaking views stretch as far as the eye can see. A short stroll up a lane the award winning Halzephron Inn offers old world charm with its low beams, open fire in winter and reputed smugglers' underground passage to the cove that shares its name.
