A report in The Times recently discovered the fact that although the majority of estate agents in the UK are seeing a downturn in the housing market, Cornwall is not.
Good quality homes, at the top end of the market are selling as fast as ever. Recent high profile visitors, such as the leader of the opposition, David Cameron, have once again put Cornwall firmly on the map. Gone are the days of endless traffic jams and greasy fish and chip shops. Cornwall now offers a host of excellent places to stay, to eat and to generally escape the rat race. The strength of the Euro has also seen people looking to holiday in this country, with Cornish destinations always near the top of any list.
A great many people now see Cornwall as the place to settle to. One estate agent reported that “Six weeks ago we sold 15 flats off-plan in one day in a new development, Tregurrian in Watergate Bay. The two-beds went for £750,000 - that's Kensington prices. This is driven by buyers who don't need mortgages, and it's not just London money - buyers come from all over the country.”. Another office based in Truro says they are “stonkingly busy”, whilst yet another claims to have completed five deals each worth over £1m in the last fortnight. They reported that “... Cornwall is bucking the national trend because we're only a small place and good houses are always in short supply, so people are always willing to take a risk. Cornwall has benefited from the market problems elsewhere. No-one wants to buy in Spain or even go there on holiday, because the exchange rate is bad and flights are expensive, so people are holidaying in Cornwall and they like what they see...” and also that this year, “many more of our buyers are moving lock, stock and barrel to Cornwall - it's their main residence, not a second home".
