Cornwall in Focus NewsNot my fault...

On recent trips to the seaside we have noticed a disregard for safety. The tragic events in Newquay has put the town firmly in the news, for all the wrong reasons. Alcohol, cliffs and young people - a dangerous mix. Today's attitude seems to be that safety and responsibility is somebody else's problem.
Surely someone has to take a stand somewhere. Maybe the town council should provide railings - a design competition for aspiring artists perhaps. You may say that the railings might be stolen, alcohol fueled youngsters may still climb over them but at least some effort will have been made to ensure more safety than there is now.
Over the last ten days over 100 people were rescued from the sea off the Cornish coast highlighting just how dangerous these waters can be. The majority of the bigger beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and areas where it is safe to swim and windsurf etc are clearly flagged. Would YOU know what the flags mean? Do you respect the power of the sea? Despite these measures, rip currents can occur at any time and drag surfers and swimmers away from the beach. It may be busy between the red and yellow flags but it is also safe. Think before risking your life and others. Always look to the lifeguards for advice. They are there for a reason and that reason is to possibly save your life.
Cliffs have been there for millions of years but the surf culture has only been really in evidence since the middle of the 20th century. How sad if people are put off visiting by the actions of a few transient visitors who may stay for just a week. Do those visitors have any thoughts for the problems they leave the town with once they've gone. Do you have to drink alcohol to have a good time?
Respect the sea. Respect the cliffs. Respect yourself. Take Responsibility.
