Levant Mine Disaster

Published 24 Oct 09 11:55

The Miners Dry at Levant Mine, West Cornwall

A Memorial Service was held on the cliff tops at Levant Mine on Tuesday 20th October 2009.

The service held in the remains of the 'Miners Dry' at the mine commemorated the 90th Anniversary of the Levant Mine Disaster of 1919, in which 31 miners lost their lives.

The collapse of the 'man engine' was initially thought to have cost just a handful of lives, but, as the days wore on, the full extent of the horror was realised.

Descendants of the miners lost, and their families gathered to pay their respects to their forefathers with a heartfelt rendition of 'Cousin Jack', led by the Cape Singers. 31 local schoolchildren each placed a rose on the grille over Engine Shaft to commemorate each man lost.
