Every year we hear of someone falling off cliffs in Cornwall. Every year we hear of people being rescued from the incoming tide when they have been cut off. Every year we all scream the same message, but it is falling on deaf ears I fear! It seems that when the sun is out, so are people's wits!!
The Air Sea Rescue, RNLI and Lifeguards work jolly hard to ensure everyone's safety but do they really need to save people who are just downright thoughtless? In today's no blame society, is it fair for people to take stupid risks tombstoning, climbing precipitous cliffs or ignoring the tide. These days, everyone expects someone else to carry the burden of responsibility. 'Don't worry there's always the emergency services to save us': What a crazy idea. Safety is everyone's responsibility and just because you are on holiday doesn't mean you can avoid that.
We are far more aware nowadays of the dangers of sunburn and heat, the wise walker knows that you never leave home without hat, suncream and water. But what about a map showing footpaths and bridleways? An OS map can give you a good idea of the difficulty of the terrain you are out to walk. The weather on Bodmin Moor can change very quickly so for the serious walker and family outing alike a map, protective clothing, compass (for those who don't do technology) or a hand held GPS (SatNav - for those who do) can be indispensible. What about the little book of Tide Times? How many horrendously expensive rescue operations could be avoided by investing just over one pound in this little gem? Surely common sense is as good as the Health and Safety Executive in some cases.
Come on, lets make this years holiday in Cornwall memorable for all the right reasons!!
