Food in FocusTourism accounts for roughly a quarter of the Cornish Economy. This is more than six times the National average. With all the safety concerns over foreign travel in recent years, many holidaymakers have decided to stay at home. Visitors to the Duchy have increased from just over 3 million people to over 5 million in the last decade. Several hoteliers, innkeepers and restauranteurs have followed the lead taken by celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein and more recently Jamie Oliver to raise food standards to supply quality food to ever more discerning customers. The excellent quality and service of these new or refurbished venues attracts new and returning visitors who are prepared to pay for these improved standards. The new entrepreneurs offer their special brand of expertise delivering fine food to ever increasing visitor numbers. They also require quality fresh food from their suppliers. This is a win-win situation for the consumer with excellent fresh produce sourced locally, cooked by professionally trained chefs, delivered to the plate in many cases within hours.
