Further Information

Bodmin

The town of Bodmin is situated in a quite central position in Cornwall and is one of the oldest towns in the county. This former county town has a population of almost 13,000 and was known as Petrockstow from the 6th century. Bodmin is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a market town and is twinned with Grass Valley in California. It was a staging point in the ill-fated Cornish Rebellion of 1497 and was also a focal point in the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion.

Lying just to the west of Bodmin Moor, the town is bounded to the south and east by the major A30 trunk road. Several industrial estates now ring Bodmin and there is quite a lot of employment opportunities in the area.

Bodmin (Bosvenegh in Cornish) is ideally placed to explore the whole county. Equidistant from the north and south coasts, Bodmin can be used as a base to visit Padstow, Tintagel and Boscastle to the north, St Austell and Looe to the south, head west towards Newquay, Truro and the far west or just as easily drive east across the moor towards Liskeard and the forgotten south-east corner of Cornwall and the Rame Peninsula. The main Paddington to Penzance railway line passes through Bodmin at Bodmin Parkway whilst the A39 (Atlantic Highway) and southern A390 are just a few miles away. The main A38 trunk road from Nottinghamshire terminates at Bodmin.

The town has several sites of interest including Bodmin Gaol and also the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Museum. The Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway runs northeast from Bodmin Parkway to Boscarne Junction via Bodmin Central and is a firm favourite with visitors.
