Newlyn
Newlyn is a town just to the west of Penzance in West Cornwall. This busy fishing port has all but been swallowed up by its larger neighbour in so much that it is hard for the casual visitor to see where Penzance finishes and Newlyn begins. The large harbour, first mentioned in 1435, is sheltered by the land with Gwavas Lake offering respite from the Atlantic storms. Newlyn (Lulynn in Cornish) and its people have always been closely linked with the sea. In 1595, Newlyn, the villages of Paul and Mousehole, as well as parts of Penzance were set alight during the Spanish Raid of that year. In the nineteenth century a colony of Artists soon to be known as the 'Newlyn School' set up in the town and the area still has more than its fair share of Art Galleries. Several books state the fact that many thousands of hogsheads of fish were landed at Newlyn in the late 1800's and although fishing is now in decline, the harbour remains as one of the major employers in the area with many tonnes of fish are exported every year.
