Truro is the capital and only city in Cornwall. The Cathedral is a spectacular piece of Victorian craftmanship founded at High Cross on the site of St. Mary's Church in 1880. Visiting the interior of the Cathedral is quite an experience. The city stands on the Truro River - a tributary of the River Fal in mid-west Cornwall. Historically not the largest conurbation in the Duchy, Truro now has a steadily growing population thanks to new building along the Highertown to Threemilestone corridor to the west of the city. Truro College boasts excellent facilities for learning and advancement whilst leisure activities are found nearer to the city centre such as the Hall for Cornwall at Back Quay. The Lemon Quay area has also undergone a recent make-over and often hosts Craft Fairs and Farmers Markets. There is a large range of shops for those requiring 'retail therapy' based around the Pydar Street, River Street and Boscawen Street area. There are some excellent restaurants catering for all tastes and a fine selection of good pubs and inns.
