About St Keverne

St Keverne village

St Keverne is a large village surrounded by farmland on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula. Its nearby villages of Coverack, Porthallow (P'ralla) and Porthoustock (P'rostock) are mainly concerned with fishing, although things are not what they used to be in the fishing industry.

It is thought that the village grew from a monastic cell and collegiate church set up by the Irish missionary saint St. Kieran (or St Achebran) as the parish pre-dates the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is reported that 'The Canons of St Achebran hold 11 acres of land and 7 ploughs'.

The Cornish Rebellion of 1497 set off from here with local Smith Michael Joseph An-Gof leading his men east to meet up with lawyer Thomas Flamank in Bodmin. Their aim to seek justice against unfair taxation with the King in London. Over 15,000 men headed east only to be routed at The Battle of Deptford Bridge (sometimes called the Battle of Blackheath). This took place on 17th June 1497 between the Cornish and by the forces of King Henry VII. There is a plaque commemmorating the rebellion on the wall of the churchyard written in both English and Cornish, as well as a statue to the two leaders on the approach to the village.
