The Beaches of East Cornwall - E20 - Porthpean Beach
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: South Coast - near St. Austell 
The beach at Porthpean is quite wide and lies in a sheltered southeast location between headlands. The name of the beach comes from the Cornish for 'Little Cove' or 'Porth Byghan' and so is pronounced 'Porth Pee-ann' rather than 'PorthPeen'. There is a decent sized car park near the beach which has relatively safe bathing. As usual local knowledge should be checked as to the state of the tide and suitable bathing conditions. All the normal facilities exist here on this sandy beach which due to its aspect can be quite a suntrap. Due to its proximity to St. Austell the beach can become quite busy in the summer months. There are good coastal walks northeast to Charlestown or south towards Pentewan. Facilities
