The Beaches of North Cornwall - N01 - Watergate Bay
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 2.5 miles north of Newquay  As can be seen from the picture above, Tregurrian Beach at Watergate Bay offers a wide expanse of firm golden sand at low tide. A favourite with surfers and sand yacht enthusiasts, this area can be quite busy on weekends. The beach extends for two miles north to Stem Point. A large car park beside the Watergate Hotel offers easy parking and there are toilets and a few shops above the beach. As the beach is very open it may be advisable to bring a windbreak with you if there are sea breezes. There is good (high level) cliff walking south to Whipsiderry, Porth and Newquay as well as north over Berryl's Point to Mawgan Porth and Bedruthan Steps. Take Care not to go too close to the cliff edged around here as cliff falls can occur - the last one in June 2005!
