The Beaches of North Cornwall - N03 - Bedruthan Steps
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 8 miles north of Newquay
Bedruthan Steps are a series of rock stacks and beach found below cliffs about a mile north of Mawgan Porth. There are a couple of car parks here. The first at Carnewas is by far the larger and is run by the National Trust. It boasts a cafe and gift shop and a path suitable for puschairs and the disabled to some extent. The second smaller car park is found a little way to the north and is less developed. There are a couple of strategically placed picnic tables here. For the adventurous, it is possible to walk down to the beach although warnings about 'being cut off by the tide' are everywhere. There are fine cliff walks, mainly to the north, to Pentire Steps and around Park Head. Legend has it that the stacks are actually stepping stones used by the giant Bedruthan to cross the bay between Park Head and Berryl's Point in the south. Facilities
