The Beaches of North Cornwall - N05 - Porthcothan Bay
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 5 miles southwest of Padstow
Porthcothan is a west facing triangular-shaped sandy beach set in a cleft in the rocks just north of Park Head and Bedruthan Steps. A shallow stream divides the beach almost in half down its length at low tide. At high tide only a small fraction of the beach remains so people head to the low dunes at the back of the beach. There are excellent cliff walks to east and west. There are toilets and a small shop here and it is possible to surf given the right conditions. It is however very unwise to swim at low tide as the sea passes the headlands and dangerous currents are encountered. Facilities
