Walking Godrevy Navax Point to Basset's Cove - 3.7 milesOS Explorer Maps 102 and 104: grid reference SW592435 to SW637441 View Map Walk Duration: 2 hours
Leave your car at the Godrevy Point car park. Make use of the public conveniences here as there are no more on the course of this walk. A short walk north leads you to the point overlooking the lighthouse. Round the point and head along the footpath due east towards your start point Godrevy Navax Point. Walk along the relatively flat path some 70 metres (220 feet) above the sea. This is a good vantage point to see all kinds of sea birds and is known locally as The Knavocks.
Continue in what is now a south-easterly direction overlooking the tiny coves of Castle Giver Cove and Fishing Cove. The path runs parallel to the contours here making this walk very suitable for beginners and the less able; frequent parking areas along the route enable walkers to break their journey at any number of points. Along the course of the walk you are seldom more than a few hundred metres seaward of the main 'North Cliffs' road - the B3301.
The path now rises gently to the top of Hell's Mouth - 88m (almost 290 feet). This is one of the highest points on these otherwise flat clifftops and has a sheer drop to the sea making it a 'must-see' for visitors to the area. There are warning signs here stating the dangerous nature of Hell's Mouth and care should be taken. Do not ignore these warnings!
The footpath continues hugging the coast tightly passing Hudder Cove and Deadman's Cove. The path runs across some National Trust land here before meeting the road again at Derrick Cove. Path and road run almost side by side here, this area is known as Reskajeage Downs. The road begins to veer a little more inland as you pass another Deadman's Cove !? Below you is the sandy beach of Greenbank Cove. The path remains very level here cutting its way through gorse and low grass. In the distance the Bawden Rocks off St. Agnes can be seen and possibly beyond.
Just offshore here are the Crane Islands. There used to be an Iron Age Hill Fort here - Crane Castle, but this has been largely eroded away. The end of the route is now in sight as you descend into Basset's Cove - formerly known as Spratting Cove - see the next stage. Previous
