Walking Newquay Harbour to Trevelgue Head - 2.9 miles

OS Explorer Map 104: grid reference SW808621 to SW823631

Walk Duration 2 hours 20 minutes

Above Towan Beach

Leave Newquay Harbour and make for the town. See my Newquay Map for more details. Make use of the small garden area above Towan Beach as the place to have your dinner. Try the Australian theme pub - Walkabout if you want something more substantial (excellent sea views). Refreshed, if the tide is right, drop down to Towan Beach and proceed along each of the beaches in turn on your way north-west. The beaches crossed will be: Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne and Lusty Glaze. Please ensure you have left enough time to make the journey to Lusty Glaze before the tide comes in.(For reference it took us 25 minutes to make the trip).

Trevelgue Head from above Porth

At the eastern end of Lusty Glaze Beach, further progress is halted by cliffs so head towards the back of the beach and then up the steep steps to meet the road. Now just over 3 hours into the walk, continue on the Coastal Footpath where signed to Porth. The headland in front of you now is Trevelgue Head - the site of an Iron Age Cliff Castle. Drop down steps to Porth Beach or return through the town to your car and continue another day. A good guidebook for the area is the National Trail Guide: SW Coast Path - Padstow to Falmouth by John Macadam. For those of you interested in surfing, the main dates for surf competitions are in early June for the British Masters and also the Headworx BPSA Open.
