The Beaches of South Cornwall - S10 - Prussia Cove

This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike.

Looking west to Prussia Cove

Formerly called Portleah, this jewel of a place in summer is often overlooked by the more casual visitor. Prussia Cove got its strange name from the exploits of a famous local smuggler called John Carter. He was known as the 'King of Prussia' due to his fanatical obsession with King Frederick the Great, of Prussia, East Germany. Prussia Cove is actually made up of three smaller coves, namely Piskies Cove (just east of Cudden Point); Bessy's Cove, named after Bessy Burrow an innkeeper famous for taking in smuggled brandy; and King's Cove a little way to the east at The Enys. There are excellent cliff walks west over Cudden Point to Perranuthnoe and Marazion and east above Keneggy Sand to Praa Sands.
