This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike.

Location: South Coast - 3 miles west of A3083 at Cury Cross Lanes

Approaching Poldhu Cove

Poldhu Cove (Black Pool Cove), is a southwest-facing beach with the rather imposing Poldhu Residential Home - formerly an hotel - on Poldhu Point to the south and the Mullion Golf course above it to the north. From the car park cross the road with care to access this flat sandy beach. Swimming and surfing is possible here taking care at low tide. A few hundred metres along the southern cliff (Angrouse Cliff) lies the monument to the great inventor Marconi who sent the first wireless signal from this very spot: Grid reference SW664194.

Marconis Monument

Read the four sides of the Marconi Monument - learning how it commemorates 'The first signal to be sent from here across the Atlantic by wireless telegraphy - a repetition of the Morse code letter 'S' - received by Guglielmo Marconi at St. John's Newfoundland on 12th December 1901'.
