The Beaches of South Cornwall - S29 - Porthkerris
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: South Coast - 1½ miles north of St. Keverne
Known locally as 'Kerris. Porthkerris has a coarse dark shingle beach and is approached down a private road off the Porthoustock - Porthallow road. Parking is allowed here on payment of the fee and it should be remembered that this is private property and so please respect the wishes of the owner by closing gates after you and parking in the allocated area. The beach is often deserted in winter but is a favourite with divers wishing to explore the nearby infamous Manacle Rocks (Mên Eglos) site of many a shipwreck. There is excellent fishing here, mainly for mackerel and garfish on the north side of the cove adjacent to the former Ministry of Defence Torpedo Testing Station and Observation Point.
