Walking Buckator to High Cliff - 1.7 milesOS Explorer 111: grid reference SX118935 to SX136952 View Map Walk Duration 1 hour 55 minutes
There are not many places to park along this coast if you only intend to walk a few miles. We chose to walk north to south by parking at the layby near Trevigue Farm and then walk back to Buckator. An excellent guidebook is the National Trail Guide: SW Coast Path - Minehead to Padstow by Roland Tarr. Park your car at the layby just south of the NT run Trevigue Farm, there is a Wildlife Information Centre here that may be used - ask to speak to Francis Couch. Take the signed footpath passing the NT omega for The Strangles.
Head seaward dropping down the few steps looking below onto the boulder strewn Strangles Beach by the waymark post. Keep to the inland path. Climb to pass another waymark post (marked Boscastle 4 miles). Negotiate a stile and drop down into the small valley crossing via the two small footbridges. Ignore the footpath off left here which leads to Pengold Farm but bear right to start climbing up High Cliff - grid reference SX132944 - incidentally this is the highest cliff in Cornwall at 223 metres (731 feet). Climb another stile as you steadily work your way up. At the crest locate the John Weaver seat. After catching your breath, continue south down from High Cliff heading for Rusey Cliff. From here the instruction is to keep as high as you can on the upper paths. Lower routes are extremely dangerous and should be ignored! Pass the waymark post and climb the stile to drop down the myriad of steps down into the valley. Cross the stile and boardwalk on the valley floor and make your way over to a waymark post.
Walk through the Rusey Landslip as the path cuts along the side of the cliff to meet another waymark post. Bear inland as indicated. At a path junction, bear right up the more defined path to yet another waymarker. Stop here for a quick breather if you wish. Climb up to the Mervyn Scott Seat atop Rusey Cliff. Pause at the NT omega for photographs before crossing the stile into rolling fields as you progress south along the waymarked path. Walk inside the fence after crossing another stile before dropping down carefully to the boardwalk and the end of this walk. From here it is possible to walk south to Boscastle by following the Boscastle to Buckator section. Otherwise, take the next inland footpath when offered towards Newton Farm where it is possible to walk north back along the road to Trevigue Farm and your vehicle..
