The Beaches of West Cornwall - W06 - Newquay Towan
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - Newquay
Towan Beach is a firm favourite with most visitors due to its proximity to the Aquarium and the harbour. This centrally placed beach is quite sheltered and is within easy walking distance of the main town and hotels. The Island with its mini suspension bridge lies at its eastern flank where the beach merges into Great Western beach. Overlooked by small gardens with palm trees and other sub-tropical plants which manage to thrive in the more sheltered areas. On a hot sunny day this beach really has a mediterranean feel. A nearby Australian theme pub, helps to continue this illusion. Apart from the surfers paradise of Fistral, Towan would probably be most holidaymakers lasting impression of Newquay. From here it is possible at LOW TIDE to walk as far as Lusty Glaze beach a mile to the northeast.
