The Beaches of West Cornwall - W14 - Trevaunance Cove
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 1 mile north of St. Agnes
St. Agnes village runs parallel with the north coast but has its former port and beach about a mile north at Trevaunance Cove. The whole area is dominated by remnants of tin and copper mining, indeed many of the nearby place names begin with 'Wheal (mine) this or Wheal that'. There are engine houses and shafts everywhere and the cliffs above the cove are laid bare by the 'quest for tin', making some areas look a little barren. The beach is mainly sand with some shingle but its proximity to St. Agnes makes it very popular in summer. The beach offers good surfing and there are several good sized car-parks, toilets, pubs and a small cafe here. A short walk on the cliif path past the 'Driftwood Spars' leads up to the view-point above Trevaunance, Cross Coombe and Trevellas Porth. Footpaths on the other side of the cove lead above the remnants of the old harbour and up to Newdowns Head - a popular picnic area.
