The Beaches of West Cornwall - W17 - Portreath
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 3 miles north of Camborne
The name of this beach may have derived from the Cornish Porth Treath meaning 'Beach Cove'. There is a moderate sized level beach of golden sand and a little shingle. At low tide it is possible to explore the rock pools beside the breakwater on the 'Lighthouse Hill' or harbour side of the beach. There is a good car park here but be sure to use the 'pay and display'! All the usual amenities are well situated close by. A surf life saving club lies at the back of the beach. Good cliff walks are possible: West towards Bassets Cove and Godrevy (Navax) Point and East about 3 miles to Porthtowan, with some great views of the north Cornwall coast on a fine day.
