OS Explorer Map 102 LandOS Explorer Map 102 Land's End

This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike.

Location: North Coast - 4 miles northwest of Camborne

The estuary at the western end of Hayle Towans

Hayle Towans is the overall name for the beach and dunes situated between the Hayle Estuary and Gwithian Towans. Inspection of a suitable OS map will indicate that the true Hayle Towans lie just northwest of Riviere Towans near the mouth of the Hayle Estuary and only occupy a relatively small area. East of Black Cliff the area becomes Mexico Towans before in turn becoming Phillack Towans and finally Upton Towans. At low tide the beach extends seaward and east as far as Godrevy and to the west it almost looks possible to wade across the Hayle River near Black Cliff to take a short cut to Porth Kidney Sands, Lelant. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO DO THIS. The Hayle River has hidden currents and wading or swimming is prohibited. Please be aware of the state of the tide if you intend to walk the whole length of the beach when you visit as certain sections become cut off by the incoming tide. For safety make a note of all the easily accessible 'escape routes' from the beach.
There is No Swimming here due to dangerous river currents.
