The Beaches of West Cornwall - W29 - Portheras Cove
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - Half a mile east of Pendeen Watch lighthouse
Portheras Cove and beach - grid reference SW388358, can be approached best by parking your car at Pendeen Watch Lighthouse and then following the coastal path down to the cove. The pleasant 15 minute walk offers the chance to look east up the coast towards Gurnards Head and Zennor. The small track leading seaward halfway along the path leads to Boat Cove worth a quick visit if you wish. The beach initially looks quite inviting but it holds a hidden secret....Please note it is inadvisable to swim from this beach, or even to walk on it barefoot, due to sharp metal fragments left from a dynamited wreck - The coaster Alacrity which ran aground in 1963. There are however opportunities to see seals along this coast in late summer brought to the area in search of sea bass.
