The Beaches of West Cornwall - W30 - Boat Cove, Portheras
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - Half a mile east of Pendeen Watch lighthouse
Boat Cove is a little cove tucked into an inlet between Pendeen Lighthouse and Portheras Cove. It can be approached best by parking your car at Pendeen Watch Lighthouse and then following the coastal path down towards Portheras Beach. The pleasant 10 minute walk offers the chance to look east up the coast towards Gurnards Head and Zennor. A wide track runs seaward downhill partway along the coastpath. Follow this passing a brightly coloured bollard down to the small cove of dark rocks unusual amongst the more commonplace granite. Pass the fishermens sheds and the small slipway to drop down to the beach of coarse sand and pebbles. From Boat Cove there's a path leading up to the main Pendeen to Portheras path and you can retrace your steps to the car or push on to Portheras, Morvah and beyond.
