The Beaches of West Cornwall - W31 - Priest Cove
This map is part of the Ordnance Survey's Explorer series designed to replace the old Pathfinder map series. At 1:25,000 scale this detailed map shows a host of attractions including gardens which are open to the public, nature reserves and country parks as well as all official footpaths, bridleways, roads and lanes. Other facilities covered include: camping and caravan sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, selected places of interest, rights of way information for England and Wales, National Trail and Recreational Path routes, and selected tourist information. The series is aimed mainly at the experienced map user but can be used by tourists and locals alike. Location: North Coast - 4 miles north of Land's End
Priest Cove lies below the unmistakeable mine chimney at Cape Cornwall. Its name has nothing to do with religion however but is in fact an anglicised version of Por'East. Incidentally the chimney was purchased by H.J. Heinz Co. to mark their centenary and presented to the National Trust on 25th March 1987. This rather small shingle beach is almost covered at high tide. At low tide a rock 'swimming pool' is uncovered along with a few rock pools to explore for the youngsters. Offshore the dark twin rocks known as The Brisons dominate the view. It is from here that the 'Brisons-Priest Cove Swimming Race' takes place during the 'Cape Games'.
There are several good cliff walks available from here, south to Ballowall Barrow and Lands End or north to Kenidjack and Botallack. It is also possible to see the automated Longships Lighthouse in the distance to the left of the cove.
